She teams with Hudson to win late-night doubles SBCC’s Sophie Angner won two matches on Friday to move into the semifinals of the
State Individual Championships at Balboa Tennis Club in San Diego.
The freshman from Sweden was seeded No. 3 in the South. She cruised past Chloe Vicari
of Sierra 6-1, 6-1, then beat Sonia Landeros (#5 South) of state team champion Ventura
6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
It’s the third straight week that Angner has gained the semifinals in a major tourney.
Three of the four semifinalists are from the Vaqueros’ conference, the Western State
Conference.
“Sophie had a good draw and she played awesome,” said coach Debbie Ekola.
Angner will take on Brazilian Juliana Bacelar (#1 South) of Ventura at 1 p.m. on
Saturday. Bacelar defeated Angner in the semis of last week’s Southern Cal Regional
6-2, 6-1 on the way to winning the title. In doubles, Angner and Talia Hudson were the third seed in the South. In a match
that started at 7 p.m., they beat Courtnei Chance-Jacquelyn Ward of Sierra 7-5, 6-2.
Angner and Hudson won their quarterfinal when Chun Young-Shin and Lindsay Guardado
of El Camino defaulted due to injury.
“We’re not used to playing under the lights but we played well,” Ekola noted. “I
was ecstatic when I heard we got a default and didn’t have to play again. The girls
got some pasta and an ice bath.”
Angner-Hudson will get a rematch with Jessica Worring-Sonia Landeros of Ventura
in Saturday's semifinals, slated for 4 p.m. Worring-Landeros, the #1 seed from the
South, beat Angner-Hudson in last week's Regional quarterfinals, 6-1, 7-6.
The four teams in the doubles semifinals are all from the WSC.
SBCC is the only school to have a doubles team in the men's and women's semifinals
at the State Tourney. Miles Seemann/Joshua Crisp-Jones won two late-night matches
on Friday, knocking off the #1 seed from the South 6-1, 6-2 in a match that ended
at 11:30 p.m.
