Swede reaches doubles final with Hudson Sophie Angner of SBCC swept her fourth straight match on Saturday morning to advance
to the All-Western State Conference semifinals in the Women’s Community College division
of the 112th Ojai Valley Tournament.
Angner, a freshman from Sweden, beat Robin Zhou of De Anza 6-3, 7-6 (3) at the Ojai
Athletic Club. She’ll take on Jessica Worring of Ventura in the semifinals on Sunday
at 8 a.m. at Libbey Park.
The other semifinal pits Ventura teammates Julianna Bacelar and Sonia Landeros.
“It’s amazing to see four WSC players in the semifinals,” said SBCC coach Debbie
Ekola. “It shows what a strong conference we have.
“Sophie played great today. She had to play an excellent match because her opponent
was solid.”
The temperature reached 88 degrees on Saturday.
Angner won two more matches with her doubles partner, Talia Hudson, a freshman from
Santa Barbara High. They’re seeded No. 1 and they downed Madelyn Koehly-Haley Moss
of Orange Coast 6-3, 6-2 and Samantha Sismundo-Sevana Zargarian of Glendale 6-3, 6-4
in the semifinals.
Angner-Hudson overcame a 4-2 deficit in the second set by winning the last four games.
It was their third win over the Glendale duo this year. The first two came in eight-game
pro sets during WSC team matches.
Angner-Hudson will meet Jessica Ho-Daria Kulbikova of Sierra for the championship
on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Libbey Park.
Ekola knows about doubles finals as she and her sister, Sherrie (Lipson) McIntyre,
reached the Ojai Community College final in 1979.
