Season Wrap-up

Vaqueros make Regional for 2nd straight year

Yvanovich-Sauer reach state semis in doubles

SBCC finished second in the WSC women’s tennis race and earned a Southern Cal Regional berth for the second straight year in 2011. The Vaqueros were edged by powerhouse Grossmont 5-3 in a tight playoff opener.
Santa Barbara was 10-4 overall and 8-2 in conference with both losses coming to unbeaten Santa Monica, which went on to capture the state championship.
“We had a great season,” said third-year coach Debbie Ekola, who’s guided her team to a 20-7 record the last two seasons. “Our program is getting better every year and we hope to continue building on that.”
Nicci Yvanovich, a sophomore transfer from NCAA Div. 1 Texas-San Antonio, had an outstanding campaign. She advanced to the Regional quarterfinals in singles and made the Regional and State semifinals in doubles with Amy Sagraves and Betsy Sauer (who joined her for the state tourney in Fresno).
Six Vaqueros earned All-WSC honors, led by first-team choice Kendra Ross at No. 6 singles. Second-team singles selections included Yvanovich, Sagraves and Meike van Hoogenhuijze.
