Saturday, May 14 -- State Championships at Fresno.
Yvanovich-Sauer fall in State semifinals
Nicci Yvanovich and Betsy Sauer came up short in their bid for a state doubles title
on Saturday in the California Community College Championships at the Sierra Sport
& Racquet Club in Fresno.
The SBCC duo, seeded No. 8 in the South, had played their first matches together
on Friday, winning twice to reach the semifinals. On Saturday, they fell to No. 2
seed Criss Rodriguez and Krystal Hansard of state champion Santa Monica, 6-0, 6-1.
“The Santa Monica team really came ready to play,” said Vaquero coach Debbie Ekola.
“They were flawless.
“We had a great season with our second straight trip to the team playoffs and making
the doubles semifinals at the Southern Cal Regional and State. Our program is getting
better every year and we hope to continue building on that.”
Friday, May 13 -- State Championships at Fresno.
Yvanovich makes State semifinals with new partner
It took more than a last-minute replacement to stop the postseason run of SBCC’s Nicci
Yvanovich, who won two matches with new partner Betsy Sauer on Friday to reach the
semifinals of the Community College State Women‘s Tennis Championships in Fresno.
Yvanovich’s doubles partner, Amy Sagraves, had to withdraw due to personal reasons.
Sauer took her place and played doubles with Yvanovich for the first time on Friday‘s
opening day of the State Championships. Yvanovich would have been seeded No. 3 in
doubles but she and Sauer were dropped to the No. 8 seed from Southern Cal.
The Santa Barbara duo stunned Alex McDonald-Nicole Simoni, the No. 1 Northern Cal
seed from Reedley, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in the Round of 16, then knocked off Nakieta Hein-Jeanette
Losario of Saddleback 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
McDonald-Simoni were the champions of the prestigious Ojai Valley Tournament.
Yvanovich-Sauer will meet Krystal Hansard-Criss Rodriguez of Santa Monica on Saturday
at 1 p.m. in the semifinals. Santa Monica beat the Vaqueros for the WSC title and
captured the State Team Championship on Thursday.
In singles, Yvanovich fell to Chabot’s Namrata Sher, the No. 2 seed from Northern
Cal, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.
“It’s so exciting to beat the Ojai champions and be in the State semifinals,” said
coach Debbie Ekola. “We needed to find a replacement early Thursday morning and Betsy
was ready to go. They’re playing some great tennis.”
Saturday, May 7 -- Southern Cal Regional at Grossmont (El Cajon).
Yvanovich-Sagraves fall in So Cal semifinal
Nicci Yvanovich and Amy Sagraves of SBCC achieved their seed on Saturday in the Southern
Cal Regional women’s tennis tournament at Grossmont College in El Cajon.
Yvanovich-Sagraves, the No. 4 seed, fell to No. 5 Jazmin Ortiz-Sharon Reibstein off
Grossmont 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. But the Vaquero duo still placed in the top
four for all of Southern California.
“We didn’t play as well as we did (on Friday),” said coach Debbie Ekola. “It was
a long tournament and they never got their energy up today.”
Yvanovich qualified for State in singles and will team with Sagraves in doubles at
the State Finals on May 13-14 in Fresno.
Friday, May 6 -- Southern Cal Regional at Grossmont College (El Cajon).
Yvanovich-Sagraves reach Regional semifinals
SBCC’s Nicci Yvanovich and Amy Sagraves won two matches in dominating style on Friday
to move into the doubles semifinals in the Southern Cal Regional at Grossmont College
in El Cajon.
Yvanovich-Sagraves, the fourth-seeded duo, beat Katie Billings-Megan Miller of Irvine
Valley 6-2, 6-1 and Mardee Littrell/Karleyne Ishima-Oien of Palomar 6-0, 6-2 in the
quarterfinals. They’ll take on No. 5 seed Jazmin Ortiz-Sharon Reibstein of Grossmont
in Saturday’s semifinals at 1:30 p.m.
Earlier in the day, Yvanovich rallied for a stunning 0-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 singles victory
over Saddleback’s top player, Avriel Tomaiko.
“Nicci played the match of her life,” said Vaquero coach Debbie Ekola. “She wasn’t
quite there in the first set but once she realized she could stay competitive, it
was an amazing match.”
Yvanovich lost to Anna Walinowicz of Orange Coast in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1.
Yvanovich qualified for the State Championships in singles and in doubles with Sagraves,
a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High. The State Tournament will be held May 13-15 in
Fresno.
Thursday, May 5 -- Southern Cal Regional at Grossmont College.
Yvanovich upsets No. 5 seed at So Cal Regional
Nicci Yvanovich scored a huge upset for SBCC on Thursday in the Southern Cal Individual
Regional women’s tennis tournament at Grossmont College in El Cajon. Yvanovich, a sophomore from Santa Cruz, had a bye in the first round, then swept
No. 5 seed Trina Vuong of Irvine Valley 6-2, 6-2.
“She played great, it was the upset of the day,” said coach Debbie Ekola.
Yvanovich will play Avriel Tomaiko of Saddleback on Friday at 9 a.m. in the Round
of 16. SBCC’s Amy Sagraves dropped her first-round match to Jessica Eung of San Diego
City 6-1, 6-2.at Grossmont in El Cajon.
In doubles, Yvanovich-Sagraves were seeded fourth and received a first-round bye.
They downed Jillian Dineros-Cressan Delima of El Camino 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 32. Yvanovich-Sagraves
will play in the Round of 16 on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday, April 30 -- 111th Ojai Valley Tournament.
Yvanovich-Sagraves fall in Ojai quarterfinals
Nicci Yvanovich and Amy Sagraves had their chances on Saturday afternoon but couldn’t
close the door in the quarterfinals of the Community College women’s doubles at the
111th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. Alex McDonald and Nicole Simone of Reedley rallied
for a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory at the Ojai Athletic Club.
“We had two match points in the second set and two more in the third,” said Vaquero
coach Debbie Ekola. “We led for most of the match and had it on our racquets. It was
a disappointing and tough loss.”
Yvanovich and Sagraves will compete in singles and doubles at the Southern Cal Individual
Regional on Thursday at Grossmont in El Cajon.

Yvanovich-Sagraves reach Ojai quarterfinals
Sauer, Yvanovich fall in Round of 32 singles
Nicci Yvanovich and Amy Sagraves turned in a solid display of tennis on Friday in
the 111th Ojai Valley Tournament. SBCC’s No. 1 duo won two doubles matches to reach
the quarterfinals of the Women’s Community College division.
“They’re one amazing team,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “They played excellent. I’ve
never seen them play better than they did in their first match.”
Yvanovich, a sophomore from Santa Cruz, and Sagraves, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos
High, breezed past Nadia Blackburn-Gabie Fortunato of San Diego Mesa 6-1, 6-0 in the
Round of 32 and then downed Tori Bohart-Tori Vande Vegte of Palomar 7-5, 6-0 at Ventura
College.
They’ll take on Alex McDonald-Nicole Simone of Reedley in a Saturday quarterfinal
at the Ojai Athletic Club, starting at 3:30 p.m.
Betsy Sauer and Kendra Ross, another doubles team from SBCC, fell to Sabrina Emery-Jourdan
Jefferson of Mt. SAC 6-0, 6-2 in the Round of 32.
In Round of 32 singles matches, Yvanovich lost to top-seeded Katerina Mozolyuk of
Santa Monica 6-3, 6-1 and Sauer was eliminated by Tiffany Shaik of Fullerton 6-3,
6-2.
Thursday, April 28 -- 111th Ojai Valley Tournament.
Vaqueros go 6-1 on opening day at Ojai
Sauer, Yvanovich reach third round in singles and doubles
SBCC’s women went 6-1 on the first day of the 111th Ojai Valley Tournament.
Betsy Sauer and Nicci Yvanovich each won two singles matches on Thursday to reach
the third round at Camino Real Park in Ventura. Sauer is a freshman from Portland,
Ore., while Yvanovich is a sophomore from Santa Cruz.
Sauer beat Patricia Escalante of Long Beach 6-0, 6-1 and MacKenzie Shutler of Irvine
Valley 6-3, 6-2. She’ll face Tiffany Shaik of Fullerton on Friday at 8 a.m. Yvanovich
blanked Lisa Kryiopoulos of Mt. San Jacinto 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and then beat
Chelsea Logan of Cypress 6-1, 6-1. Yvanovich will meet top-seeded Katerina Mozolyuk
of Santa Monica in another 8 a.m. third-round match on Friday.
SBCC’s Amy Sagraves dropped a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 first-round decision to Katherine McFeeters
of Fresno City.
In doubles, Sauer-Ross and Yvanovich-Sagraves had first-round byes. In the second
round, Sauer-Ross knocked off Jessica Eung-Mercedes Guerriero of San Diego City 6-0,
6-1 and Yvanovich-Sagraves shut out another San Diego City duo, Melissa Chaysouk and
Ledia Gutierrez, 6-0, 6-0.
Sauer-Ross will meet Sabrina Emery-Jourdan Jefferson of Mt. San Antonio on Friday
while Yvanovich-Sagraves will battle Nadia Blackburn-Gabie Fortunato of San Diego
Mesa. Both matches are set for Ventura College at 12:30 p.m.

Vaqueros drop a heartbreaker 5-3
They fall to No. 3 Grossmont in South Regional
After playing state powerhouse Grossmont to a draw in singles on Tuesday in a first-round
South Regional women’s tennis match, SBCC dropped two doubles matches and lost a tough
5-3 decision in El Cajon.
“It was a real heartbreaker,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “We had this one on our racquets.”
Amy Sagraves, Meike van Hoogenhuijze and Kendra Ross posted singles wins for the
WSC runner-up Vaqueros (10-4), who had their four-match win streak snapped. Anna Slyutova
lost a close 6-4, 7-6 (2) decision at No. 5 singles.
In doubles, Jami Thomas-Lupita Sandoval edged Van Hoogenhuijze and Slyutova 7-6 (2),
6-3 at No. 3 to secure the fifth point.
Grossmont, an 11-time state champion, was seeded third in the eight-team regional
while SBCC was fifth. The Griffins, champions of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference,
are 16-1 this year.
“It came down to who wanted it more,“ said Ekola. “We gave it our best shot. This
was as close as a first-round match can be.”
SBCC was leading in No. 2 doubles when the match was called because Grossmont got
the fifth point. Betsy Sauer and Ross of the Vaqueros were ahead 4-6, 6-3, 2-0.
Four Vaqueros will compete in the Ojai Tournament, which starts on April 28. Sauer,
Sagraves and Nicci Yvanovich are entered in singles with Yvanovich-Sagraves and Sauer-Ross
competing in doubles.

Yvanovich, Sagraves make Regional
They qualify in singles and doubles at WSC tourney
Nicci Yvanovich and Amy Sagraves advanced to the WSC women’s tennis quarterfinals
on Saturday at Ventura College and earned Southern Cal Regional berths in both singles
and doubles.
Play was halted at the quarterfinal stage and all remaining players earned spots
in the regional, which will take place on May 5-7 at Grossmont in El Cajon.
Yvanovich, the eighth seed, swept Gwendolyn Kauffman of Santa Monica 6-2, 6-1 while
Sagraves, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, upset No. 5 seed Sevana Zargarian of
Glendale 6-4, 6-4. Three other Vaqueros, including No. 6 seed Betsy Sauer, lost in
the Round of 16.
In doubles, the fourth-seeded Yvanovich-Sagraves blanked Vaughn Valdez-Carolyn Morris
of Ventura 6-0, 6-0 to advance. Three other Vaquero duos were eliminated by teams
from WSC champion Santa Monica.

Vaqueros sparkle at WSC tourney
4 singles, 4 doubles advance to Round of 16
Four singles and four doubles squads from SBCC survived the first day of the WSC women’s
tennis tournament on Friday at Ventura College.
Second-round winners for the Vaqueros in singles were No. 6 seed Betsy Sauer, No.
8 Nicci Yvanovich, Amy Sagraves and Meike van Hoogenhuijze. The doubles team of Caroline
Wachtmeister and Julia Rios rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to beat a
team from Glendale 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.
The other three SBCC doubles teams -- No. 4 seed Yvanovich-Sagraves, No. 6 seed Sauer-Ross
and Van Hoogenhuijze-Anna Slyutova all had byes into the Round of 16.
The singles get underway at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with the doubles starting at 3:30
p.m. All the winners of those matches (WSC quarterfinalists) will advance to the Southern
Cal Regional on May 5-7 at Grossmont College in El Cajon.

Singles go 73-7 in games in home finale
SBCC dominated the singles on Tuesday, winning four matches 6-0, 6-0 and taking 73
of 80 games in a 9-0 women’s tennis shutout of Hancock at Pershing Park.
The Vaqueros (10-3, 8-2) completed a 5-1 home campaign and finished second in the
Western State Conference behind unbeaten Santa Monica. They were nearly perfect in
doubles with a 24-1 record in games.
Santa Barbara will compete in the WSC Individual Tournament on Friday and Saturday
at Ventura College. Betsy Sauer is seeded No. 6 in singles, Nicci Yvanovich is No.
8, Amy Sagraves is 11th and Meike van Hoogenhuijze is 14th.
In doubles, Yvanovich-Sagraves are No. 4, Sauer-Ross are No. 6 and Van Hoogenhuijze-Anna
Slyutova are 11th.
The WSC Tournament stops at the quarterfinals in singles and doubles and the remaining
players all advance to the Southern Cal Regional.

Vaqueros clinch second with 8-1 win
Slyutova wins fifth point in three-setter
Anna Slyutova dominated the third set to earn the decisive fifth point on Tuesday
and SBCC swept the doubles in an 8-1 victory at Bakersfield.
The Vaqueros (9-3, 7-2) clinched second place in the WSC for the second straight
year. They’ve won three in a row and six out of seven.
Slyutova, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, beat Jennifer Chan 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1
at No. 5 singles. She also teamed with Meike van Hoogenhuijze for an 8-3 doubles win.
The Vaqueros will host Hancock in their final WSC match on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Wachtmeister gets winning point
She earns two wins in first collegiate match
SBCC captured five of six singles on Friday and Caroline Wachtmeister got the decisive
fifth point in her first college match as the Vaqueros topped Ventura 7-2 on the road.
It was the second straight win and fifth in six matches for SBCC (8-3, 6-2 WSC).
Kendra Ross, and Meike van Hoogenhuijze were also double winners for the Vaqueros.
Wachtmeister, a freshman from Sweden, won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and teamed with
Van Hoogenhuijze for an 8-3 doubles victory.
“Caroline played a brilliant match,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “She was very relaxed
and was able to win our fifth point to make it 5-1.“
The Vaqueros will take the next 10 days off for Spring Break. They return to action
on April 5 at Bakersfield.

Vaqueros improve to 4-1 at home
SBCC won the last four singles Tuesday and went on to beat Glendale 6-3 in a WSC match
on the Pershing Park courts.
Amy Sagraves, Meike van Hoogenhuijze, Anna Slyutova and Kendra Ross posted singles
wins for the Vaqueros (7-3, 5-2), who improved to 4-1 at home.
SBCC blanked Glendale 9-0 in their first meeting on Feb. 24.
“Their team has improved greatly,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “We had to work for this
victory.”
The Vaqueros travel to Ventura on Friday.

Santa Monica tops Vaqueros 7-2
Ross garners both SBCC points
Undefeated Santa Monica won two three-set matches in singles and a close No. 1 doubles
to defeat SBCC 7-2 on Friday in a women’s tennis match at Pershing Park.
The Corsairs (8-0, 6-0) captured five of six singles to improve to 16-0 in WSC matches
over the last two years. Kendra Ross won at No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles with Betsy
Sauer for the Vaqueros (6-3, 4-2).
Nicci Yvanovich dropped a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles and Amy Sagraves
fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 3. Yvanovich and Sagraves, the Vaqueros’ No. 1 doubles team,
also suffered a narrow 9-7 setback.
“If we win those three, we win the match,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “Kendra played

They sweep doubles for fifth time
SBCC downed Bakersfield 8-1 on Thursday at the Pershing Park courts for its third
straight WSC triumph.
The Vaqueros (6-2, 4-1 WSC) swept the three doubles matches for the third straight
match and fifth time this season.
“We got a great win at No. 1 singles,” said coach Debbie Ekola, referring to Betsy
Sauer‘s 6-2, 6-4 victory. “She beat Denisa Hromadkova, who had just beaten Santa Monica’s
No. 1 (Criss Rodriguez) and she’s very good.
“The comeback by Meike (van Hoogenhuijze) at No. 4 was our highlight. She lost the
first set 6-1, then won the next two 6-2, 6-2. That gave us our fifth (and deciding)
point.”
SBCC finishes the first round of WSC play in second place behind Santa Monica (5-0).
The Corsairs will visit SBCC for a first-place showdown on Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m.

SBCC’s doubles were perfect on Tuesday as the Vaqueros downed Hancock 8-1 in a WSC match
in Santa Maria. Santa Barbara (5-2, 3-1 WSC) won for the fourth time in five matches.
The Vaqueros captured all three doubles with a perfect 24-0 record in games. The
doubles winners were Nicci Yvanovich-Amy Sagraves, Betsy Sauer-Kendra Ross and Meike
van Hoogenhuijze-Anna Slyutova.
SBCC will host Bakersfield on Thursday at 2 p.m.

SBCC looked sharp in its second home appearance of the year on Thursday, knocking
off Ventura 8-1 in a WSC match at Pershing Park.
The Vaqueros (4-2, 2-1) swept the last five singles matches by a combined game count
of 60-6.
It was the third win in four outings for SBCC, which travels to Hancock on Tuesday.

Three singles go to third set
Santa Monica went 4-2 in singles, then swept the doubles on Tuesday in a 7-2 WSC
victory over SBCC at Reed Park in Santa Monica.
The Corsairs (4-0, 2-0) are the defending WSC champions. The Vaqueros fell to 3-2
and 1-1.
“The final score doesn’t indicate it, but this was one of the closest matches we’ve
ever played,” said coach Debbie Ekola, whose Vaqueros were second in conference last
year. “Every match was tight. Three of the singles went three sets and they got two
of them.”
Meike Van Hoogenhuijze and Kendra Ross posted singles wins for the Vaqueros.
SBCC will host Ventura on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Vaqueros take WSC opener 9-0
Yvanovich wins third set 6-0
Nicci Yvanovich won the only singles match that went three sets on Thursday as SBCC
blanked Glendale 9-0 in its WSC opener at Glendale.
Yvanovich, a transfer from Texas-San Antonio, beat Samantha Sismundo 6-1, 4-6, 6-0
at No. 2 singles.
“Nicci cruised through the first set, then the other girl caught fire,” said coach
Debbie Ekola. “I had a little chit-chat with Nicci and she dominated the third set.”
All three wins for the Vaqueros (3-1, 1-0) have come by 9-0 scores.
Friday's home match against Cypress has been postponed by rain.

Sagraves, Van Hoogenhuijze get singles wins
Grossmont took a 4-2 lead in singles on Friday afternoon and went on to defeat SBCC
6-3 in a nonconference match in El Cajon.
Amy Sagraves and Meike van Hoogenhuijze posted singles wins for the Vaqueros (1-1),
who were playing their second match in two days. Betsy Sauer and Kendra Ross got the
other point with an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles. Grossmont (1-0) has won 11 state titles,
most recently in 2008.
Sauer, SBCC’s No. 1 player, dropped a close 7-5, 6-4 decision in singles.
“It was a hard-fought match at No. 1,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “Kendra won her first
set (at No. 6 singles) and really fought hard. The outcome came down to a couple of
close matches.”
Nicci Yvanovich and Anna Slyutova lost a narrow 8-6 set at No. 3 doubles.
SBCC will meet Sequoias in its home opener on Friday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.

Sauer rallies for 3-set win at No. 1
Betsy Sauer rallied from a set down to win her No. 1 singles match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
on Thursday, setting the tone for SBCC’s 9-0 season-opening women’s tennis victory
at San Diego Mesa.
“Betsy’s match was the highlight of singles,” said coach Debbie Ekola, whose team
won 12 of 13 singles sets. “There were some great rallies in her win. We played solid
tennis all-around.”
Nicci Yvanovich (6-0, 6-1) and Amy Sagraves (6-1, 6-0) cruised at No. 2 and 3 singles,
respectively.
