Season Wrap-Up
Bullemer grabs third in state
Vaqueros struggled with consistency
Consistency was a tough to find for the SBCC women's golf team in 2011.
The Vaqueros had a roller-coaster campaign that ended with a fourth-place finish
in the WSC Championships at Olivas Park in Ventura. Glendale, which lost the state
title by a stroke to Palomar, captured the conference crown with a 32-4 mark. SBCC
was 14-22.
"We played in the best conference in the state against two of the top teams (Glendale
and Canyons)," noted coach Chuck Melendez. "There's little room for error If you want
to compete with them."
Nicole Bullemer, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, had an outstanding year. She
finished seventh in the WSC Championships, ninth in the Southern Cal Regional and
third in the state after rounds of 80 and 78 at Kings CC in Hanford.
Bullemer earned All-WSC and All-State honors.
"Nicole played great, it was a fantastic way to end her two-year career," said Melendez.
"She's exactly what you're looking for in a student-athlete."
The Vaqueros opened the season with their lowest score in years. Bullemer fired a
season-best 4-over-par 76 at Buenaventura GC and Emily Wisma matched her as the team
shot 312 at the South Coast Classic. The Vaqueros shot 336 the next day and finished
fifth.
Freshman Kristin Discipulo had a strong midseason run with rounds of 79, 78, 79 and
77. Haley True, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, shot a season-low 75 on Sept.
28 to capture medalist honors at WSC No. 4. Bullemer was second at 77, leading SBCC
to a 319 and second place, just three shots behind Glendale.
Wisma and Discipulo both shot 36-hole scores of 162 at the WSC Championships and
tied for 10th place. They were named All-WSC, along with Bullemer, and earned trips
to the Southern Cal Regional.
