Season Wrap-Up
Vaqueros take third in WSC
Steele, Jimenez, Gonzalez make all-conference
SBCC won five of its last seven games in the 2011-12 campaign but came up just short
of earning a seventh straight trip to the Southern Cal Regional playoffs.
The Vaqueros took third in the WSC North with records of 7-5 and 13-14. Four of their
five conference losses came to Ventura and Moorpark, who were a combined 22-2 in WSC
play.
Brooke Berry, one of the top returning players, suffered a season-ending injury in
the first game against Reedley. The Vaqueros lost four other players with major injuries
and another for breaking team rules.
“It was a challenging year with all the injuries that left us with a final group
of nine,“ said eighth-year coach Sandrine Krul. “They really stuck together, that’s
what it’s about.
“They’re not the most talented, they’re not the most gifted but what did they do?
They believed in each other and then they go out and get the win. That’s what we’re
trying to teach every one.”
Leslie Steele, Jennifer Jimenez and Mercedes Gonzalez were named to the first-team
All-WSC North squad.
Steele, a 5-8 sophomore guard, had a team-high 7.8 scoring average and led the team
with 54 3-pointers.
Jimenez, a 5-8 sophomore from Bishop Diego High, averaged 8.1 points and 5.7 rebounds
in WSC play. Gonzalez, a 5-10 sophomore forward, averaged 5.4 points and 8.3 rebounds.
She grabbed 13 and 14 boards in her last two games.
Elia Salazar, a freshman forward, scored a season-high 25 points with 11 rebounds
in the season finale. The Vaqueros beat L.A. Pierce 71-56 and she was named conference
Player of the Week.
