Rome Spring 2019 SBCC Program

Program Description

Contemporary Fiction, Creative Nonfiction Writing, Art History, and Italian Language in Rome, Italy

February 3, 2019 - May 4, 2019

The American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) may have said it best when he described Rome writing, “How is it possible to say an unkind or irreverent word of Rome? The city of all time, and of all the world!”

The “Eternal City” offers students the magical opportunity to live amongst some of the most famous and important art and architecture in the world. Imagine meandering down cobblestone streets into the Piazza Navona, throwing Euros into Trevi fountain, sitting on the Spanish Steps, or sipping a cappuccino in St. Peter’s Square. While in Rome, you will tour all of the gems that it has to offer such as the Sistine chapel, the Vatican Museum, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum.  Additionally, you will see more of Italy when you take two weekend side trips to Venice and the Amalfi Coast.

Courses offered include non-fiction Creative Writing and Literature as well as Italian Language. The Creative Writing will encourage you to chronicle your experiences and to use language to capture the true beauty of Italy. The Contemporary Fiction course will use course texts in which Italian literature and American literature are set in Italy. In addition, the Italian language and art history courses will help you to gain a deeper understanding of Italy's language, art, and culture.
