Home of the Vaqueros!
2012 Fall Preview
October 4, 2011
With practically a whole new squad this year, Paula Congleton is looking forward to
her 14th year as SBCC’s softball coach.
Last season, the Vaqueros went 31-7 overall and 16-2 in the WSC, which led to the
WSC title and a run in the playoffs. The 2011 squad was small, yet powerful, which
led to the team’s success on the field with only 11 girls. In regard to size, this year’s team is a whole different story.
The roster of 19 is made up of two sophomores: Mariah Coyazo (Beaumont, CA) and Alyse
Harris (Denver, CO). Mariah is the only returner from last year’s squad. The freshmen class consists of Celeste Acosta (San Jose, CA), Emilee Bachmann (Covina, CA), Sabine Bourret
(St. Helena, CA), Kiersty Briner (Goleta, CA), Samantha Cabada (Patterson, CA), Tara
Crawford (Santa Barbara, CA), Kayla Dormer (Rocklin, CA), Brianna Gill (Patterson,
CA), Roxanne Hugo (Carpinteria, CA), Lauren Larabell (Hesperia, CA), Sheila Lopez
(Santa Barbara, CA), Kylie Onstott (Lake Isabella, CA), Natalie Orosco (San Diego,
CA), Ruby Palomares (Santa Barbara, CA), Nicole Pearce (Carpinteria, CA), Brianna
Portese (Las Vegas, NV), and Bryn Thompson (Bakersfield, CA).
This year’s team possesses strength and depth in many areas. Although the team is
very young, there is plenty of time for growth. Coach Congleton believes that the
2012 squad can be just as successful as last year’s team. “It just might be the right time and the right team to reach the long-awaited goal
to rise to the CCC State Championship,” she declared.
The coaching staff is very excited about this young group. It will be interesting
to see because the roster is filled with so much talent. Battles are going on at
every position, each day in practice. “We have always been one of the WSC Conference’s
best defensive teams and I expect that to continue. The WSC is a highly competitive
league that continues to get better every year, but I believe this young squad can
rise to the challenge. I expect us to be competitive, hard-working and remain focused
for the 2012 championship,” says head coach Congleton.
Bill Hilliard is returning for his 10th season as assistant coach, along with Erin Breck who is joining this year’s coaching
staff for her first season. Congleton is elated to have one of her former standouts
join the staff. Erin, a former WSC All-Conference second baseman, is returning to
SBCC after completing her Bachelor of Science in Communications degree at the University
of Tennessee where she focused on TV sports journalism. Erin has been working with
the players, developing both offensive and defensive prowess. She is very detailed
and has already had a big impact on the team.
As the defending WSC champs, the 2012 SBCC softball team will search to do it all
again this year and more. The upcoming season looks to be promising.
