Joan and Laura Cannon, twin sisters who are standouts on the SBCC softball team, have been honored for their academic achievements.
They were named SBCC’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year and recognized during Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press
luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Café.
They have identical 3.84 GPAs and were honored as the top scholar-athletes for SBCC during the 2010-11 academic year. Their
current classes include Animal Biology, Math 131 and Film Studies 101.
Both are members of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. The former two-sport stars (basketball and softball) at Albany High
in Berkeley hope to transfer to UC Davis in the fall.
Joan, a center fielder, and Laura, a shortstop, have started for the Vaquero softball team the last two years. Joan earned
first-team All-WSC honors as a freshman and Laura was honorable mention.
SBCC is 9-1 this year with an eight-game winning streak.
“Joan is a talented center fielder who can gun you out from 180 feet in the blink of an eye,” said coach Paula Congleton.
“She has nine stolen bases and is hitting .310.
“Laura is also doing exceptionally well, batting .367, and is a huge part of the success of our infield.”
The Vaqueros play at Ventura on Tuesday and have a home doubleheader against Oxnard on Thursday, starting at 1 p.m.
