A fast finish propelled SBCC into the Southern Cal Softball Regional for the second straight year. The Vaqueros (24-17) won their last five games and 11 of the last 13 to finish second in the WSC Gold Division with a 13-5 record.
Santa Barbara was seeded 16th for the Regional and went to No. 1 Canyons for a best-of-3 series. After dropping the first game, the Vaqueros came back on Sunday to beat the Cougars (38-2-1 at the time) by a 3-2 count, handing them their first home loss in 18 games.
Canyons won the next game 13-1 to take the series, 2-1.
"That was a great win in the first game (on Sunday) and our kids really believed they could win two today," said coach Paula Congleton. "We were never intimidated."|
The defending WSC champion Vaqueros only had two sophomores on their squad. They started the year 0-4 after a tough four-game trip included games against No. 1 Cypress and Canyons.
On March 4, SBCC beat Southwestern 8-4 to capture the Golden West Tournament and Tara Crawford was named MVP. Five days later, they beat Long Beach 4-2 to go over the .500 mark at 9-8.
Two Vaqueros were named first-team All-WSC Gold Division -- sophomore pitcher Alyse Harris (12-11, 3.52 ERA, .317 batting avg.) and center fielder Samantha Cabada (.358).
Second-team choices were catcher Lauren Larabell (the leading hitter at .427), third baseman Bryn Thompson (.322), first baseman Natalie Orosco and outfielder Brianna Portese (.276 with a team-best 5 HRs, 28 RBIs and .533 slugging percentage).
Larabell, a freshman from Hesperia, had a 12-game hitting streak during the year and hit safely in 31 of 36 games.
"We have 13 freshmen coming back and we told them to remember what happened (in the Regional), so we can improve when we get to the playoffs next year," said Congleton.
