Lori Gaskin, Ph.D.
President, Santa Barbara City College
Lori Gaskin is president of Santa Barbara City College in Santa Barbara, California. The college serves a diverse population of approximately 20,000 credit students and 12,000 non-credit (continuing education) students in south Santa Barbara County. In 2013, SBCC was named the co-winner of the Aspen (Institute) Prize for Community College Excellence, achieving the rank of #1 community college in the nation. The college was recognized for its quality and focus in four areas: facilitating underrepresented and minority student success, student learning outcomes, degree completion and transfer rates, and labor market success in securing good jobs after college.
Prior to her appointment as SBCC president in July 2012, Dr. Gaskin served as president
of West Valley College in Saratoga, California for three years. Previously she served
in a number of academic leadership positions at Lake Tahoe Community College, including
Vice President of Academic Affairs & Student Services and Dean of Instruction.
Dr. Gaskin began her career in the California Community Colleges 30 years ago as a part-time faculty member at Barstow College. Academically trained as a fluvial geomorphologist, she discovered her true calling very quickly as a community college earth science teacher. As a tenured faculty member at Barstow College, Dr. Gaskin taught in the fields of geography, geology, and mathematics and served in faculty leadership roles at the college before migrating north in 1992 to Lake Tahoe Community College.
Dr. Gaskin’s professional involvement includes state and regional activities. She served two terms as the statewide president of the California Community Colleges Chief Instructional Officers and also has served on seven comprehensive accreditation teams for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Dr. Gaskin holds a B.A. and M.A. in Geography from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Nevada, Reno.
In Santa Barbara, Dr. Gaskin is active in the community. She serves on the Board of Directors for Cottage Health System, United Way of Santa Barbara County, Partners in Education, and on the Advisory Councils for the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara and YMCA. She also serves as an Ex-Officio Director of the Channel City Club and member of the Steering Committee for the Santa Barbara County Re-Entry Project, Fighting Back, South Coast Executives, and the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce.
