SPAN 010: Basic Spanish Skills for ESL I

For Spanish speakers who want to learn how to read and write in their first language, as a means to progressively gain reading and writing competency in English. First part of a sequential education program.

SPAN 101: Beginning Spanish I

Skills Advisories: Eligibility for ENG 110 or ENG 110H.

Focuses on the essentials of spoken and written Spanish for the beginner and provides an introduction to the culture of Spanish speakers.

SPAN 102: Beginning Spanish II

Prerequisites: SPAN 101 or two years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

SPAN 103: Intermediate Spanish I

Prerequisites: SPAN 102 or three years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Review of grammatical structures and vocabulary building through readings. Further work with intermediate listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Research and discussion of cultural topics.

SPAN 104: Intermediate Spanish II

Prerequisites: SPAN 103 or four years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Focus on further development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Review of grammatical structures and vocabulary building through readings. Research and discussion of cultural topics. Laboratory work required as an integral part of the course.

SPAN 110: Spanish Punctuation

Skills Advisories: Eligibility for English 110 or ENG 110H.

Introduction to the fundamentals of Spanish punctuation. The use of diacriticals and punctuation marks. Designed to increase accuracy of student who writes in Spanish at all levels.

SPAN 111: Spanish Written Accents

Skills Advisories: Eligibility for English 110 or ENG 110H.

Introduction to the fundamentals of Spanish phonetic and graphic accents. Designed to increase accuracy of student who writes in Spanish at all levels.

SPAN 114: Beginning Occupational Spanish

Emphasis on commonly used structures, communicative functions and vocabulary of beginning Spanish, as spoken in the workplace.

SPAN 115: Intermediate Occupational Spanish

Skills Advisories: Eligibility for ENG 110 or ENG 110H.

Study of intermediate sentence structures. The indicative, subjunctive and imperative moods; present, past and future tenses. Emphasis on commonly used structures, communicative functions and vocabulary for everyday use in the workplace.

SPAN 116: Intermediate Spanish for the Healthcare Professional

Prerequisites: SPAN 102 or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Designed for the intermediate-level Spanish learner in the medical health profession who needs to effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking clients and co-workers. Topics include common diseases, anatomy, and protocol for obtaining a medical history. An in-depth look at the patient cultural belief systems as related to illness and health.

SPAN 117: High Intermediate Occupational Spanish

Study of high intermediate sentence structures. Review and reinforcement of the indicative and imperative moods, and introduction of the subjunctive moods; present, past and future tenses. Emphasis on commonly used structures, communicative functions and vocabulary for everyday use in the workplace.

SPAN 120: Beginning Spanish Conversation

Prerequisites: SPAN 101 or two years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Oral expression in Spanish at the beginning level.

SPAN 129: Bilingual Conversation Exchange

Course Advisories: SPAN 101 or SPAN 101CD, or ESL 40 and ESL 41 and ESL 42.

Interactive course for Spanish and ESL students to build conversation skills and foster cultural understanding.

SPAN 130: Intermediate Spanish Conversation I

Prerequisites: SPAN 102 or three years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Promotion of free and spontaneous oral expression in Spanish at the intermediate level.

SPAN 131A: Beginning Spanish Grammar I

Review of Spanish grammar fundamentals. Designed to increase accuracy of written and oral communication in Spanish. Class taught in English.

SPAN 131B: Intermediate Spanish Grammar II

SPAN 132: Introduction to Literary Analysis

Prerequisites: SPAN 104 or SPAN 147 or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Introduction to literary analysis through study of various literary genres. Focus on discussion, synthesis and analysis of short stories, poems, drama, and essays in Spanish. Prepares student for Spanish upper division courses.

SPAN 133: Survey of Spanish Literature

Prerequisites: SPAN 104 or four years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Designed for the student who wishes to be introduced to Spanish Literature and improve Spanish reading and writing skills. Focus on readings, discussion and analysis of literary works by main Spanish authors, from the Middle Ages to the present. Prepares student for Spanish upper division courses. Class is taught in Spanish.

SPAN 134: Survey of Latin American Literature

Prerequisites: SPAN 104 or four years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Designed for the student who wishes to be introduced to Hispanic American literature and improve Spanish reading and writing skills. Focus on readings, discussion and analysis of literary works by main Hispanic American authors, from the Conquest to the present. Prepares student for Spanish upper division courses. Class taught in Spanish.

SPAN 135: Latin American Culture

Prerequisites: SPAN 104 or four years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Culture course that allows the student to study and research topics of special importance to the Hispanic world. Written and oral presentations are required. Class taught in Spanish.

SPAN 136: Contemporary Cultures Of Central America

Prerequisites: SPAN 104 or four years of high school Spanish or qualifying score on the SBCC SoML placement exam.

Examines Hispanic cultural dimensions, allowing students to study topics of importance to the Central American region. Class taught in English.

SPAN 138: Contemporary Culture Of South America

South American culture exploration that allows the student to study and research topics of special importance to this region of the Hispanic world. Written and oral presentations are required. Class taught in English.

SPAN 139: Contemporary Cultures Of Spain

Skills Advisories: Eligibility for ENG 98 and ENG 103.

Examines modern Spain from a cultural perspective, allowing the student to study topics of importance to Spain and Spanish America. Class taught in English.

SPAN 140: Intermediate Spanish Conversation II

Designed to facilitate the acquisition of higher grammatical competency in writing, higher understanding in reading, and the ability to draw on a more varied vocabulary and complex verbal system for target-language production.

SPAN 145: Intermediate Spanish for Native Speakers, II

Designed to bring students who speak Spanish with native or near-native fluency to a “distinguished” level, according to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.

SPAN 146: Intermediate Spanish for Native Speakers I

Prerequisites: SPAN 102 or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Intended for the advanced student who wishes to perfect his/her knowledge of the language. Includes discussion of literary selections, vocabulary building, composition and study of more complex grammatical structures. Laboratory work is required as an integral part of the course.

SPAN 160: Advanced Spanish

Prerequisites: SPAN 104 or 147 or 150 or qualifying score on SBCC SoML placement exam.

Intended for the advanced student who wishes to perfect his/her knowledge of the language. Includes discussion of literary selections, vocabulary building, composition and study of more complex grammatical structures. Laboratory work is required as an integral part of the course.

SPAN 170: Introduction to Translation and Interpretation

Introduction to standards and techniques of translation and interpretation. Acquisition of interpretation and translation skills of written materials.

SPAN 200: Study In Mexico, Spain or Latin America

Skills Advisories: Eligibility fro ENG 110 or 110H.
Course Advisories: ENG 98 with a minimum grade of "B".

An intensive Spanish language program stressing oral ability, pronunciation, grammar and culture. This course is a variable unit session taught in Mexico, Spain or in Latin America.

SPAN 290: Work Experience In Spanish

Skills Advisories: Eligibility for English 100 or 110H.

Work experience on a job or project where the use of Spanish is required and critical to its completion. Student increases and refines Spanish oral, aural and written skills, and learns and compares cultural characteristics of the Spanish-speaking people living in the United States, as applied to the job or project.

SPAN 299: Independent Study In Spanish

Skills Advisories: Eligibility for ENG 110 or ENG 110H.

Limitation on Enrollment: Eight units in Spanish courses completed with 3.0 or higher GPA; minimum of 12 units of course work completed at SBCC with a GPA of at least 2.50.
