Vaqueros just miss playoffs
SBCC can't overcome 1-4 start in WSC
SBCC came within one game of making the Regional men's volleyball playoffs for the
second straight year in 2012.
"There were some shiny spots and some blemishes," said setter Jordon Dyer, one of
four sophomores on the 15-man roster. "We had one of the weirdest seasons, starting
conference 1-4, then winning four straight."
The Vaqueros entered conference play with a 5-2 record after beating the 2011 State
champion and runner-up. Due to a scheduling quirk, they played four of their first
WSC matches on the road, then four of five at home.
They went 1-4 in the first five, then reeled off four straight wins before falling
WSC champion and eventual state champ Long Beach 3-1 in the season finale.
"We were one of the hottest teams at the end, yet didn't make the playoffs," said
second-year coach Armen Zakarian. "We hadn't tasted defeat in a really long time.
There's no way you can lose four in a row and expect to be a lock in the playoffs.
Certainly not in a 10-game season.
"This is the first 10-win season we've had in a while and there's no way this is a
letdown. We finished the season 10-7 and we beat some great teams -- the 1st- and
2nd-place finishers from last year's championship match (Irvine Valley and Grossmont)
and we beat No. 2-ranked El Camino."
The Vaqueros finished 10-7 overall and fourth place in the WSC at 5-5, one game behind
Moorpark.
Matt Winslow, who was No. 2 in WSC kills with 189, was a first-team All-WSC choice
along with Dyer. Winslow was the only freshman on the first team. Middle hitter Chris
Utroske and opposite Cody Kreitzer were second-team selections.
Winslow had a season-high 30 kills and hit .551 in the 3-1 upset of El Camino on April
4 and Dyer handed out 50 assists against Long Beach.
"We played as well as we could have played to finish the season," Zakarian concluded.
"Give credit to the kids, they did everything they needed to do. We just came up a
little short."
