The Santa Barbara City College men’s golf team is under the direction of Chuck Melendez,
Professor of Physical Education. He's a four-time WSC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year
(2004, '05, '06, '08) and has served as President of the California Community College
Women’s Golf Coach Association. Melendez is the only SBCC coach with two state titles,
leading the women's golf team to championships in 2006 and 2008.
Chuck grew up and was educated locally, attending Dos Pueblos High School (Goleta)
and Santa Barbara City College before getting advanced degrees at Eastern Oregon State
University & Humboldt State University. He was a star athlete at all levels, participating
in football and baseball. He led the 1976 Vaquero football team to the WSC championship
as their quarterback. He finished his college career as one of the leading QBs in
the nation at Eastern Oregon State.
Chuck joined the SBCC Physical Education and Athletic Departments in 1991. During
his tenure, he has served as head baseball coach, head football coach, and is currently
the head men’s and women’s golf coach. He has played golf all his life and is a low-handicap
golfer.
