JP Dodson has been selected as SBCC's Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2011-12
school year. The sophomore received his award on Monday during the Santa Barbara Athletic
Round Table press luncheon at Harry's Plaza Cafe.Dodson, a 6-foot-1 guard, was the top scorer on the men's basketball team. He has a 3.71 GPA, majoring in physics.
"I like the whole environment at SBCC," said Dodson, who grew up in Santa Barbara and attended San Marcos High. "The teachers are good and I like the facilities. The library is an awesome place. Just the whole environment."
He said the key to being a good student is "keeping on track with all your work and not getting behind. I learned that early on. Being an athlete makes it tougher because you're constantly busy with practice and games."
Two years ago, he had a 4.3 GPA at San Marcos. He was named MVP of the Channel League after helping the Royals to the league title.
Dodson described physics as "a real passion of mine. I want to pursue it as far as I can." He'll continue his studies at UCSB in the fall and plans to try out for the basketball team.
Dodson is a member of the National Honor Society, the California Scholarship Federation, the SBCC Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa.
