SBCC linebacker Sam Shipley signed his letter-of-intent Wednesday to play football on a full scholarship at the University
of Maine.
Shipley, a former San Marcos High standout, was fifth in Southern Cal and eighth in the state with 102 tackles in the regular
season (11.3 per game). He missed the majority of two games with a hamstring injury.
He played football at SBCC in 2006, then went on a two-year Morman mission to Texas before coming back for his sophomore
year in 2010. He and his wife, Kaisey, have a four-month-old boy, Bentley.
“I got a good feeling talking with Maine’s coach (Jack Cosgrove) on the phone,” said Shipley, 23. “When I went on my visit,
it really felt like the right place for me to be successful in football and academics.”
The Black Bears will play National runner-up Delaware in the fall, as well as Bowl Championship Series member Pittsburgh.
Shipley will major in Spanish studies and plans to go to medical school in the future.
His best effort at SBCC came in Week 3 when he had 18 tackles, including six solo, against Ventura and was named American
Pacific Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
“It was fun to see the difference in our team from the first week against Hancock to Game 10 against West L.A.,” said Shipley.
“We had our share of mistakes and adversity and it was great to see how the guys responded to that adversity.”
Shipley was a first-team All-APC defensive choice for the Vaqueros, who went 4-6. Maine, 4-7 last season, is an FCS school
that competes in the Colonial Athletic Association.
