It was a year of close contests

In a season of tight battles, SBCC came within a couple touchdowns of winning the American Pacific Conference football championship.
The last seven games were decided by seven points or less and the Vaqueros went 3-4 in those contests. They finished 4-6 on the year and fourth in the APC with a 3-3 mark.
In Week 3, Santa Barbara rallied from a 35-0 deficit with 34 second-half points against Ventura before falling 45-34. In a battle of 2-0 conference teams, SBCC was down 35-30 to eventual APC champion L.A. Pierce in the closing minutes but couldn’t convert with a first-and-goal opportunity at the 7-yard line.
They lost to the top three conference teams by a total of 17 points.
“The main thing is our guys fought back after being down or close,” said fourth-year coach Craig Moropoulos. “Considering all our injuries, that’s all you can ask of a team.”
The Vaqueros played without their top receiver (Art Gonzales), top running back (Michael Douglas), one of their top linebackers (Sam Shipley) and a pair of key defensive linemen (Joel Boucher, David Izebere) due to various injuries throughout the season.
John Uribe, a sophomore quarterback from Santa Barbara High, was named Offensive Player of the Year for the conference. He completed 62.5 percent of his passes (182 of 291) for 2,554 yards with 23 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.
He was No. 2 in the state with a passer rating of 157.5.
In Week 5, Uribe racked up a career-high 330 yards against L.A. Southwest. One week later, on Oct. 9, he threw for 290 yards and tied a school record with five TD passes in a 35-28 win at Santa Monica.
Uribe is guaranteed a spot on the All-State Region IV team.
SBCC's offense averaged 402 yards and ranked ninth in Southern California.
Other first-team All-APC picks were Michael Douglas (who had four straight 100-yard games), receiver Chad Toocheck and tackle Chris Anderson. On defense, freshman Manny Hernandez made the first team at linebacker and punter along with Shipley, a sophomore from San Marcos High.
Douglas led the APC in rushing, Hernandez was No. 1 in punting (39.0 avg.) and Toocheck was the No. 2 receiver in the conference with 60 catches, 851 yards and nine TDs.
Hernandez tied for the state lead in tackles with 130 and Shipley was eighth with 102.
“This was the most enjoyable team I’ve coached,” said Moropoulos. “I run the offense and this was an outstanding group. Uribe played all but three plays this year and keeping him healthy was a big key to our success.
“We‘ve got some good guys coming back in Manny, Alonzo Winn (RB), Marcus Griffin (LB) and a few quarterbacks. We’re hitting the recruiting trail hard as we always do.”
