Schaeffer grabs fifth at Ventura Invitational

SBCC’s Erika Schaeffer opened the cross country season in fine fashion on Friday with a fifth-place showing at the Ventura Inviational.
The sophomore ran 21:27 in the 5K race at Arroyo Verde Park, shaving 93 seconds off her time from last year in the same meet. Danielle Low of L.A. Trade Tech was the winner in 20:46.
";Erika ran well within herself today and looked very controlled and confident,” said Vaquero coach Scott Fickerson.
In the men’s four-mile race, SBCC sophomore Garrett Edwards placed 12thin 23:13.
 ";Garrett ran a very conservative race plan,” Fickerson noted. “And he still improved 1:07 over his time from this meet last year. This is a tremendous improvement and shows he's on track for an excellent season.";
The full Vaquero squad will compete on Sept. 24 in the WSC Preview Meet at Oxnard.

Schaeffer takes sixth at WSC Preview

Erika Schaeffer of SBCC placed sixth in the WSC Preview Meet on Friday and Garrett Edwards was ninth in the men’s competition at Oxnard College.
There were 95 finishers in the women’s 5K race, which was won by Brianna Jauregui of Glendale in 18:23. Schaeffer was clocked in 19:02 and teammate Ktahryn Carvin was 38th in 21:39.

SBCC didn’t have enough runners for a team score in either race.
“Not scoring as a team was a tough obstacle to overcome,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “We've been struggling with some injuries and eligibility issues, but hope to work those out and get a full squad out for our next meet.
“The athletes that did compete today ran strong races.”

Edwards places 22nd in men’s race

Erika Schaeffer finished third in the SBCC Invitational for the second straight year on Friday at Leadbetter Beach and Shoreline Park. The sophomore from Newbury Park covered the 5K course under cloudy skies in 20:51, improving her time from last year by nearly 1:20.
Sara Toberty of Orange Coast won the race, which started on the beach and ended in the park, in 20:28. Glendale, ranked No. 2 in Southern California, took the women’s team title, beating Orange Coast 36-49 in the 10-school competition.
Ayla Granados was 18th for SBCC in 21:28 while Sarah O’Connor finished 51st in 23:15.
“Erika ran a really strong race and this is a great way to head ito the conference championship meet,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “Ayla ran a great race as well and put herself in the position to be a top 10-racer at the conference meet.”
In the men’s four-mile race, Garrett Edwards took 22nd for the Vaqueros in 22:50. Germay Tesfai of Fresno City was the winner in the 143-man field in 21:48.
“Our men were strong,“ said Fickerson. “They raced the course smart by moving up in the second half of the race and being tough when it mattered most. Garrett ran 1:15 faster than last season, so this was a great improvement for him.
“We were very pleased with the turnout today. The weather conditions, while not as picturesque as a nice sunny day, were ideal for hard racing, so I'm happy for the athletes.”

Saturday, Nov. 6-- Southern Cal Championships, Mission Bay Park, San Diego, 10 a.m.

Schaeffer nabs 17th at So Cal Championships
She earns State berth, along with O’Connor, Edwards

Sophomore Erika Schaeffer placed 17th for SBCC in the Southern Cal Championships on Saturday at Mission Park in San Diego and earned a spot in the State Cross County Championships.
Schaeffer ran 19:51 in the 5K race that featured 194 runners. She shaved 20 seconds off her time from the Southern Cal Preview meet on the same course on Oct. 9.
Freshman Sarah O’Connor, who missed training last week due to illness, took 97th in 21:49 to join Schaeffer in the State Meet on Nov. 20 in Fresno.
Southwestern won the women’s title and Danielle Low of L.A. Trade Tech was the individual winner in 18:27. SBCC didn’t have a team score because only four runners finished.
"Neither Erika nor Sarah felt particularly strong but they went out and grinded it out and did what they had to do to move on to the state,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “Sofia (Danielson, 22:59) ran great, improving about a minute from her time here a month ago and Laura (Aviles, 26:18) is a real scrapper and deserves big kudos for running tough on a badly sprained ankle.”
SBCC’s Garrett Edwards qualified for state after finishing 49th in a field of 207 with a time of 22:05. Luis Garnica was 121st in 23:16, 33 seconds faster than last month.
"Garrett struggled a bit this week as he's fighting a cold and had a busy week of classes,” Fickerson noted. “We focused on just getting a qualifying spot to state, so he has two weeks to rest up and get in a great last race."

Saturday, Nov. 20 -- State Championships at Woodward Park, Fresno, 10 a.m.

Schaeffer takes 13th in State Championships
She runs season-best time; Edwards finishes 96th in men’s race

Danielle Low of L.A. Trade Tech topped the 209-woman field in 17:39. Southwestern won the team title over Glendale (74) and L.A. Trade Tech (78).
"Erika and Sarah ran phenomenal races,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “They executed our race strategy perfectly and ran really tough, gutsy races."
Vaquero sophomore Garrett Edwards placed 96th in a men’s field of 217 with a 21:53 clocking on the four-mile course. David Cardona of El Camino was the winner in 19:57.
San Bernardino Valley captured its fifth straight title with 78 points.
“While it wasn't his fastest time of the season, Garrett ran a very aggressive race and went for it today,” Fickerson noted. “He did what he had to do to be successful. I'm very proud of everything he accomplished this season."
