Tutor Training Seminar
This is a five-week seminar for employed SBCC tutors who want to gain or enhance their tutoring skills. Participants in this
seminar will learn how to organize tutorial sessions, help students develop problem-solving strategies, and offer assistance
with core academic competencies. Some of the topics covered include communication skills, learning skills and styles, culture
and learning, small group management, and outcomes-based instructional support.
Completion of the seminar fulfills mandatory requirements for the CRL A (College Reading and Learning Association) Tutor Training Certificate.
The College Reading and Learning Association has certified over 275 tutor training programs since 1989. To certify an institution, the CRLA carefully reviews the tutor training program according to CRLA guidelines. They review all instructional materials related to the class.
Santa Barbara City College offers Level 1 CRLA certification. Upon completion of the Tutor Training Seminar, students receive a tutoring certificate. This certificate is recognized at many colleges and universities here and abroad. It is also a good way to document skills for your resume.
