Becoming a Tutor
Thank you for your interest in tutoring at SBCC. There are two types of tutors: General and Gateway. General tutors work with a department and have prearranged drop-in tutoring hours. All students needing help in a specific subject visit that tutor during his/her tutoring hours. Talk to the Tutorial Center Coordinator about the subject(s) that you feel competent to tutor, and she can give you the name of the department tutor supervisor to contact regarding tutoring opportunities.
Gateway tutors work with a specific instructor and class. The best way to become a tutor for the Gateway program is to visit the SBCC website online class schedule at http://www.sbcc.edu/classes and look at the online class schedule for the subjects that you feel competent to tutor. If there is a "G" in the second column, that class has been designated as Gateway. To see if a Gateway instructor would like to hire you as a tutor, you would need to contact the instructor directly. Instructor contact information can be found online at http://www.sbcc.edu/directory.
If a department tutor supervisor or Gateway instructor wants to hire you, the next step would be to come to the Tutorial Center, Room 120, in the Cartwright Learning Resources Center to start the hiring and training process. Bring your social security card and picture ID or your current passport with you. Please note that the majority of the tutors are hired within the first few weeks of the semester.
