PARTICIPATORY GOVERNANCE

Communication • Cooperation • Collaboration

The Continuing Education Division of SBCC values all constituents by empowering each with a voice in the decision-making process. The primary function of participatory governance is to promote active and responsible engagement in decision-making processes by providing appropriate venues for discussing issues and vetting concerns for detailed review and analysis. The success of participatory governance requires the good will and cooperative involvement of all constituent groups — including students, faculty, classified staff and administrators.

There are currently three official groups that are active in the governing structure of SBCC Continuing Education:

  • Citizens' Advisory Council
  • CE Consultation Council
  • Achieving the Vision for Continuing Education

Each group meets on a regular basis with the Vice President of Continuing Education on matters related to Division issues and operations. Open, clear lines of communication are welcome and encouraged. New, alternative or unpopular viewpoints are important to consider. A spirit of innovation and creative problem solving is valued.

The governance structure should remain dynamic, flexible and modifiable to accommodate Continuing Education needs as well as changing situations, policies, laws and responsibilities defined at the District and State levels. Multiple perspectives are sought, however the District still has the ultimate responsibility for making decisions that best serve the CE Division. Final recommendations are forwarded to the College President.
