Alternatives to Testing
You are not required to take the assessment tests if you have acceptable scores on
certain national exams such as Advanced Placement, or if you have successfully completed certain
math or English courses at another college. In some instances, students can use test
scores from another college for placement into classes at Santa Barbara City College.

PREREQUISITE CHALLENGE - FORM A
If you have one or more of the alternatives to testing listed below you will need
to submit official documentation (a transcript, score report, etc.) and Prerequisite
Challenge FORM A. For more information on specific deadlines and the required steps
for clearance go to the Prerequisite site. Note: AP, SAT, ACT, UC and CSU (with the exception of EAP) exam results require
an official high school transcript and a counselor conference. Please take your score
report and transcript to Counseling for review.
English Test Alternatives
(1) Advanced Placement English exam score of 3, 4, 5 (2) International Baccalaureate
English Exam score of 5 or higher (3) SAT Writing score of 680 or higher (660 prior
to March '05) (4) ACT Combined English/Writing test score of 30 (5) Proof of AWPE
exam passage at UC, or EPT exam passage at CSU (6) EAP exam passage at CSU, pilot
for 2010-2015 only - Note: 'conditional' status not acceptable (7) Equivalent English 110 (Freshman Composition) course, completed with a grade
of "C" or better at another college. Note: For most out-of-state and private colleges
a catalog course description is required. (8) B.A. or B.S. degree from a regionally
accredited college or university in the United States.
Math Test Alternatives
(1) Advanced Placement Calculus AB or BC exam score of 3, 4, 5 (2) Advanced Placement
Statistics exam score of 3, 4, 5 (3) Equivalent prerequisite math course from another
college, completed with a grade of "C" or better. Note: For most 4-year, out-of-state
or private colleges, a catalog course description is required. (4) Qualifying raw
score report from an MDTP math test taken at another California Community College.
Provide score to the Assessment Office. (5) EAP exam passage at CSU, pilot for 2010-2015
only - Note: 'conditional' status not acceptable (6) Student elects to begin at the Math 1, Basic Math level (Student must notify
Assessment staff for option number 6).
Important: Contact the Assessment Office, Room SS-251, (805) 730-4149 for more information or
to confirm whether or not your particular score or course is one that can be used
at SBCC.
PREREQUISITE CHALLENGE - FORM B
A student may also petition to challenge a prerequisite based upon (1) knowledge or
ability to succeed, (2) prerequisite course has not been made reasonably available,
(3) the prerequisite is not valid, (4) prerequisite is discriminatory, and (5) prerequisite
was not established in accordance with the District's process for establishing prerequisites.
