JANUARY 25- FEBRUARY 19, 2010
RECEPTION: FRIDAY JANUARY 29, 5-7PM

DENSITY features work that is labor intensive, non-computer based, dense with visual information, and considerable handwork. There will be a mix of media and scale: large on-site wall installations to small prints to a 22’ long rug woven with shirt labels. Artworks come from private collections as well as artists’ studios.

These are not fast works either in the making or the viewing. There is a certain slowing down when experiencing each work due to the amount of visual data. The time consuming process of each work becomes apparent, amplifying the inherent richness of the artwork.

DENSITY artists reside in New York, Chicago, and southern California. There will be two artists from New York, Thomas Weaver and Arthur Sordillo. Both use layers of images on layers of paper but find different sources for their inspiration. Two artists are from the Santa Barbara area. Ann Diener will show a large scale drawing from her current, powerful body of work. Linda Ekstrom, known for her meditative and slowly produced artwork, will exhibit three-dimensional pieces.  Christine Morla from Ventura will do an entire wall installation with paint, paper and weavings, using candy wrappers, wall paper, post-it paper tape, and push pins.

Several works in the exhibition come from area collectors. Since the 1990’s local artists Tom Morey and Michael Jameson have been collecting the etchings of the Chicago artist, Tony Fitzpatrick. They will loan the gallery eight prints. From the Barry and Jo Berkus collection comes the large scaled charcoal drawing of noted LA artist Steve Galloway. Fran and Keith Puccinelli are loaning the older shirt label braided rug, made by an unknown artist, found years ago at a flea market.
